Free Picks Parx Racing:

We have had a great couple of days with the site selections this week Wed/Thurs. At Woodbine and Belmont Park 16 selections with a total of NINE WINNERS posting a strike rate of %56.25 and more importantly an ROI of $56.00 to a $2 stake.

We visit Parx Racing today for the big day of racing the Pa Derby and the return of California Chrome and its colourfull and loud owner. He runs well off the break but has some quality opposition to contend with.

Parx racetrack has come under a lot of critisism lately mainly for its high takeouts and the poor facilities for the player the slot money should be kicking soon to bring it upto par with the prizemoney on offer with each days racing.

Woodbine Mile

Several of our members asked us for our PICKS for the Woodbine Mile.

2014 Ricoh Woodbine Mile. 14th Sept Sunday

Ricoh Woodbine Mile field.

Pace scenario: #3 ANCIL is likely to go to the front early but should have company from the start from #4 SILVER FREAK followed closely by #8 BOBBY’S KITTEN. The latter may get first run on the closers in the stretch but is likely to be passed by one or two late in the stretch.

#1 RIVER SEVEN (Stalker) Gelding ended last year stringing together four straight wins which included a front running ten length demolition over the course and distance in October in the Labeeb Stakes in which his nearest pursuer was Grand Arch. Next he wore down the very useful Frac Daddy  when winning the Grade Three Commonwealth Turf at Churchill in which race his beaten rivals included today’s morning line choice, Kaigun (over whom River Seven gets a six pound advantage at today’s weights). Following a win in the Harlan’s Holiday Stakes on the dirt at Gulfstream the son of Johannesburg threw in a clunker when eased  in the Grade One Donn Handicap after which he was given some time off. Since his return River Seven has raced four times on this turf, recording a decent fourth place finish over the course and distance in the King Edward Stakes and was unable to improve after stalking slow early fractions at the ten furlong distance when fourth in the Sky Classic Stakes here last month. The four-year-old (who worked a solid five furlongs in 1:00 4/5 ten days ago) appears to be rounding back into his best form and looks to have been campaigned with this event in mind for much of the year by trainer Nicholas Gonzalez. Importantly, River Seven’s two biggest wins last year were both achieved on ground with some give which, with some rain in the forecast, he may well get on Sunday.  Owner of the highest Beyer figure in the field can get a perfect trip stalking the likely fast early pace under Jesse Campbell who was aboard for gelding’s Labeeb Stakes win last year and could pull off the upset.

#5 KAIGUN (Closer) Deserving morning line favorite came within a length of catching Wise Dan when second in the Grade One Makers Mark Mile at Keeneland in April and has won both of his two starts on this turf course. Son of Northern Afleet was shortened up in distance off a decent effort in the eleven furlong United Nations Stakes in July when he closed  from far off the pace to win the seven furlong Play the King Stakes in his latest here last month. Here he defeated stablemate Lockout in a victory that was easier than the three quarter length margin suggests with rider Patrick Husbands gearing down late. Prior to finding the distance too far in the United Nations, Kaigun twice faced Seek Again, finishing just behind that one at Churchill and a length to the better at Monmouth. Taking a strict line on form this  puts him close on ability to Grand Arch and Jack Milton who were both narrow defeated by Seek Again in the Fourstardave Handicap. However, when one considers that Seek Again was perhaps much the best in that Saratoga race, winning despite serious traffic trouble in the stretch, Kaigun’s form is enhanced.  Trainer Mark Casse has won with 20% of his runners at this meet and, with top local rider Patrick Husbands remaining aboard, four-year-old can get another good trip closing into a fast early pace.

#8 BOBBY’S KITTEN (Presser) Colt was disappointing in his latest when unable to keep the lead when second in the mile and a sixteenth Hall of Fame Stakes at Saratoga and two back when finding ten furlongs too far in he Belmont Derby. However, he  produced his lifetime best performance three back in the Penn Mile defeating good three-year-olds Global View and Storming Inti after being able to stalk the early pace at today’s distance. Son of leading turf sire Kitten’s Joy has won four of eight starts on grass for trainer Chad Brown who wins with 17% of his runners in Graded Stakes races. No three-year-old has won this race in it’s present format but colt figures to get a perfect trip, similar as he did in the Penn Mile, tracking the likely pacesetters, Ancil and Silver Freak, and may get first run in the stretch over the closers under Joel Rosario.

#9 JACK MILTON (Closer) Son of excellent turf sire War Front finished third in the course record breaking Fourstardave Handicap in his latest at Saratoga last month when making his first start since disappointing in the Shoemaker Mile at Santa Anita in June. Dark bay finished just behind Grand Arch (over whom he gets a four pound weight pull) in the Fourstardave but was a touch unlucky in the stretch run when kept in by a rival to his outside a furlong out and was closing late when clear. Four-year-old may at his best distance today over which he won the Grade Three Poker Stakes at Belmont earlier this year and is trained by racing’s leading money earner Todd Pletcher. Colt often seems to find trouble but should get a good trip on this fair course running from off the pace here under Javier Castellano.

#2 TRADE STORM (Closer) English invader rallied to finish a good third behind Wise Dan in this event last year and finished an excellent fourth in the Group One Dubai Duty Free over nine furlongs earlier this year when closing from far off the pace. Six-year-old was last seen when narrowly beaten in a Group Three over a mile and a eighth at York last month when possibly still needing an outing being his second after a near four month break. Bay is likely to be far off what promises to be a lively early pace here and can be running late for a chance at a share with Jamie Spencer coming in to ride but may find this mile distance on the short side.

#11 GRAND ARCH (Stalker) Son of Arch is in his career best form, coming off a fine second place finish in the Fourstardave Stakes at Saratoga in August, but is slightly flattered by that finish considering the traffic trouble of the winner and the third place finisher, Jack Milton who will get a slight weight pull here.  Five-year-old has won three of his seven starts on the Woodbine turf and will be one of three saddled here by trainer Brian Lynch who wins with 14% of his runners in graded stakes. Consistent gelding won the King Edward Stakes over the course and distance two back and can be stalking the likely fast pace with David Moran retaining the mount but may prove a touch below the best in here.

#7 LOCKOUT (Closer) Stablemate of Kaigun was outrun by that one when also closing from far back to finish second in the Play the King Stakes in his latest and has a record of 6-2-1-1 on this turf course. Five-year-old defeated today’s rival Silver Freak over seven furlongs here in May when benefiting from a perfect trip and earlier in his career finished a good third in the Grade Three Commonwealth Turf at Churchill. Son of Limehouse can be running late but it is hard to see him reversing the placings with Kaigun beat him much easier in their last meeting than the three quarter length margin may suggest.

#4 SILVER FREAK (Speed) Chestnut will try stakes company for the first time and comes off a gate-to-wire win at this distance at Saratoga in early August when making his first start since being passed late when third behind Lockout over seven furlongs here in May. Lightly raced five-year-old has a record of 5-2-1-2 on grass and, while loses previous rider Rosario to Bobby’s Kitten, will get the services of four time Woodbine Mile winning jockey John Velazquez in the saddle. Without the presence of the speedy pair of Ancil and Bobby’s Kitten, gelding could have been a longshot with a chance of leading gate-to-wire but in this scenario is hard to see being more than a pace factor.

#6 DORSETT (Closer) Four-year-old showed improvement when fourth in the Fourstardave Stakes at this distance in his latest at Saratoga when finishing a close fourth behind today’s rivals Grand Arch and Jack Milton in his second outing for trainer Brian Lynch. Son of Artie Schiller won a stakes over a mile at Canterbury last year in impressive fashion but has managed just one third past the post finish from seven tries in graded stakes company and loses previous rider Velazquez to another of Lynch’s entrants. Colt may be improving and has been working well but it is hard to see him being a serious factor at the finish.

#10 HIS RACE TO WIN (Closer) Four-year-old comes off a win when rallying from off the pace in the Grade Three Seagram Cup over a mile and a sixteenth on the main track here early last month and was last seen on grass when taking an allowance at Keeneland in the spring defeating Kalamos who failed to flatter that form in subsequent efforts. Son of good turf sire Stormy Atlantic recorded his best Beyer figure when winning his latest and is trained by Malcolm Pierce who is winning at a rate of 32% of his starters at this meet. Colt has a good closing kick which could help here but has not show the ability to be a serious threat at this level.

#3 ANCIL (Speed) Son of excellent turf sprint sire City Zip has not been seen since fading to finish fourteenth after showing some early foot in the Group One King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot over five furlongs in mid-June. Five-year-old has not raced further than six furlongs since 2011 and  finished third after leading early in one of his two lifetime starts going a route distance on grass. Curious spot for good trainer Joan Scott to opt for and one has to presume the tactic will be for rider Justin Stein to go to the lead from the start and set the pace as long as he can. With several in this field with tactical speed, seems unlikely the chestnut will be able to set slow enough fractions to see him lasting this distance.

Conclusion:

#5 KAIGUN appears the the most likely winner but will also be the shortest odds in what is a very competitive field. #1 RIVER SEVEN will offer huge value and is capable of beating this field on his best day. I will play #1 Win/Place/Show and  key #1 in trifectas while using 2,5,8,9,11 in the positions around him.

Woodbine Mile

Several of our members asked us for some more information on the Woodbine Mile Draw which took place on Thursday 11th – here it is folks, enjoy!

2014 Ricoh Woodbine Mile. 14th Sept Sunday

Ricoh Woodbine Mile field.

A competitive field of eleven has been set for Sunday’s Grade One Ricoh Woodbine Mile with eight locally based runners entered, two from south of the border and one from England, none of whom should should be compromised by the draw.

1 River Seven (Jesse Campbell)

2Trade Storm (Jamie Spencer)

3 Ancil (Justin Stein)

4 Silver Freak (John Velazquez)

5 Kaigun (Patrick Husbands)

6 Dorsett (Luis Contreras)

7 Lockout (Gary Boulanger)

8 Bobby’s Kitten (Joel Rosario)

9 Jack Milton (Javier Castellano)

10 His Race to Win (Eurico da Silva)

11Grand Arch (David Moran)

The leading contender and top local hope looks to be #5 KAIGUN who got within a length of Wise Dan earlier this year and who comes off a nice prep winning the seven furlong Play the King Stakes here last month.

#8 BOBBY’S KITTEN won the Penn Mile three starts back and may get a perfect trip from just off the pace at his best distance while trying to buck the trend of no three-year-olds having won this race.

English Challenger #2 TRADE STORM was a very respectable third here behind Wise Dan last year and rates a solid chance improve on that finish.

Todd Pletcher will be represented by #9 JACK MILTON who was a touch unlucky when third in the Fourstardave Handicap at Saratoga in his latest outing.

Local trainer Brian Lynch may have a strong hand saddling the improving #8 DORSETT, #11 GRAND ARCH, who narrowly missed in the Fourstardave Handicap last time, as well as the front running type #4 SILVER FREAK who will get the services of last year’s winning rider John Velazquez in the saddle.

#10 HIS RACE TO WIN merits consideration off his win on the main track in the Seagram Cup last month and #1 RIVER SEVEN and #7 LOCKOUT are not without chances while sprinter #3 ANCIL may try to take the field gate-to-wire.

With an honest early pace anticipated, this intriguing event looks wide open and should provide plenty of betting options. We will take a detailed look at all the entrants tomorrow.

An Introduction to the Woodbine Mile

By | Free Picks, What's New | No Comments

Woodbine Mile

Woodbine Mile

Several of our members asked us for some more information on the Woodbine Mile – here it is folks, enjoy!

2014 Ricoh Woodbine Mile.

The Woodbine Mile has long been one of the most important fixtures on the North American grass racing calender and for the seventh time will be part of the Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” series. First run in 1988 as the Molson Export Challenge, the race was restricted to three-year-olds going a mile and a quarter. The present format of the one mile distance and open to older runners was adopted in 1997.

Breeders’ Cup Implications:

In the first running of the Woodbine Mile in 1997, the Bill Mott trained five-year-old, Geri rallied from far off the pace to defeat eleven other runners in his final outing before finishing second in the Breeders’ Cup Mile. Since that year, nine more winners of the Woodbine Mile have used this race as part of their build-up to the Breeders’ Cup Mile.  Most recently, Wise Dan followed his wins of the 2012 and 2013 Woodbine Mile with wins in the BC Mile. Court Vision, winner in 2010, was unplaced in the 2011 Woodbine Mile before scoring a shocking win in the 2011 Breeders’ Cup. This means the last three winners of the most important turf mile event of the year came out of this race.  Other winners including Labeeb (1998), Good Journey (2002), Touch of the Blues (2003), Leroidesanimaux (2005) and Turallure (2011) all subsequently hit the board in the Breeders’ Cup Mile. While Ventura,  the lone filly to win the Woodbine Mile when victorious in 2009, finished second in that year’s Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint.

Favorites and Age:

In the 17 renewals of the Woodbine Mile since 1997 five favorites (29%) have won with Wise Dan returning the lowest payout of $2.50 with his win last year. The biggest upset came in 1999 when Quiet Resolve returned $91.10 when awarded the victory after being struck in the face with his rival’s whip. While this has always been open to three-year-olds, only seven of that age have been entered with Wando coming closest to victory with his fourth place finish in 2003. Five and six-year-old have been the most successful with six wins apiece while four-year-olds have taken five of the renewals.

Trainers and Jockeys:

Wise Dan’s repeat win last year gave trainer Charles Lopresti his third Woodbine Mile victory, matching the achievements of the late Bobby Frankel and Neil Drysdale each with three wins since 1997. Locally based Mark Frostad has sent out two winners and overall runners based in North America have won thirteen of the seventeen renewals. Canadian trained entrants have kept the prize at home four times. Jockey John Velazquez’s winning ride on Wise Dan last year was his fourth Woodbine Mile victory, two more than Kent Desormeaux and Garrett Gomez who have both won this twice.

Europeans:

While the Woodbine Mile has become one of the most important North American stepping stones to the BC Mile, it has not attracted the very best of the European runners. In the 17 years of the race, there have been no winners coming from sixteen foreign based runners. It can be noted that of the 17 winners, six (seven if one includes Hawkley Hill who was disqualified after passing the post first in 1999), had started their career’s in Europe. Arkadian Hero (2000) and Jim and Tonic (1998) both narrowly missed winning and the Newmarket based trainer David Simcock shipped Trade Storm to finish a decent third here last year.

Running Style:

With the sweeping turns and long stretch the course is most favorable to runners closing from off the pace with ten of the last seventeen runners using that style on their way to victory. However, Leroidesanimaux (whose 7 ¾ length win in 2005 is the biggest margin recorded) and Soaring Free (2004) both led for much of the trip on the way to their victories. Wise Dan, who set a course record winning in 1:31 3/5, last year, stalked the early leaders in both of his two wins illustrating any run style can be effective here for the best runner.

The field for the 2014 Ricoh Woodbine Mile will be drawn on Thursday Sept 11th and we will take a look at the leading contenders and their post positions at that time.

Monday, Sept 1st 2014 Woodbine Racing Card Free Picks

Free Picks Woodbine;

Below are the selections for the Labour Day card at Woodbine Canada.

Today is when the racing world changes from summer meets to fall and most tracks celbebrate with festivities and top class racing.

It is also a sad day in the Woodbine racing world in both Thoroughbred and Standardbred codes of racing.

The passing of Max Breta, Owner and huge supporter in both codes.

I had the pleasure of meeting Max at Edmonton while working for TV/RADIO where he had a horse running in the Canadian Derby trained by a Rookie trainer Steve Chircop with whom thru Max I have become good friends with.

As he explained to me he was in the game to help the little guy ….. he certainly did with Steve they took a ordinary 3yo claimer KARA’S ORIENTATION and made the colt into a Derby runner up and a G2 stakes winner.

That was the kind of guy Max was he talked a lot but the brief time I knew him his sayings stuck with me.

“Its all about the Crispy Cringle” his fianancial slang for money.

When I am at Dresden this afternoon watching our harness horse compete in Race 10 around 3.15pm

# 3 OLDFRIENDSKENTUCKY m/l 12/1 in a prefered pace. I know you will be looking down Max and urging us on in our efforts to win that CRISPY CRINGLE.
