Nyquist for the Preakness – Yes or No?

By | Free Picks | No Comments

Roy Steele award winning handicapper  gives his thoughts on the second leg of the Triple Crown the Mile 3/16th Preakness G1 on dirt…..worth $1.5000.000.

This could be DEJA VU  with Nyquist looking the part of a horse on a Triple Crown mission and following in the hoof prints of American Pharoah.

JP Reddam Owner and native of my town Windsor Ontario Canada has come close before in this series and will have learned a lot with his Doug O’Neill team.

# 3 Nyquist m/l 3/5 …..  Not much more you can say about this guy 8 races 8 wins just under 5 million in the bank. One of three Uncle Mo’s in the field. Gutierrez hasn’t got to the bottom of this athletic colt yet just seems to be able to do enough.

Expect him to pull off down the back stretch and repel all. Won’t be playable price wise so this is a race for the exotics Ex, Tri, Superfecta.

#6 Lani  m/l  30/1 ….. This is my idea of an upset if there is to be one if not a spirited challenge. Japan Connections were bitterly disappointed at his Derby run just couldn’t get in the race and had to go 8 wide to attempt to get in the race.

If he can produce the run he did in the UAE Derby his stamina will come into play the whole of Japan are confident of a big run also myself.

# 5 Exaggerator  m/l  3/1 ….. The Desormeaux (Keith and Kent ) brothers are hanging in there and any other year would be tasting glory. Will have something to aim at and cannot be ignored for the runner up position plus will take advantage of any mishaps.

# 11 Stradivari  m/l  8/1 ….. Todd Pletcher trained colt who is lightly raced and drafts into this contest. Hasn’t ran against much but his performances have been nothing less than breath-taking…. chomping at the bit in the morning works Johnny V has an engine underneath of him and he can make it very interesting.

Recommend playing these four Boxed in the Superfecta, Tri, and Ex.

Will be interested to see what kind of prices the new betting Exchanges are throwing up.

# 5 Spring House  m/l  10/1 ….. Small field for this 7f highlight race which will help this guy’s chances.

# 3 Songs And Laughter  m/l  5/1 ….. Flying in his two races to date gets him in shape to go all the way today.

Race 9

Super Grass works for Woodbine”

Wednesday 17th May 2016.

Woodbine Racetrack

Woodbine has long been known for its excellent AP Taylor Turf course possibly the best in North America and is up there in the World rankings.

Turf racing returns Wednesday evening 17th May on the evening card. The decision and what a decision to introduce European style racing (racing anti clockwise) on the turf in some races is taking time to materialise with electronic timing being adapted etc.. all ahead of schedule and a full slate of racing from a different direction is about ready to go.

This keeps Woodbine front and center in the innovation stakes and does attract another kind of horse helping trainers to place their horses.

All this and the new Synthetic track a switch from Poly to Tapeata are giving lots of racing options.

The word on the back stretch is the new poly track is good. It hasn’t been the best of weather to introduce a new track and everyone handicappers especially are getting to grips with the nuances of the Tapeata. Fields are marginally bigger plus a lot of turf horses are competing well on the surface it is enabling them to get a run. The fact trainers have been shipping in Ward, Stidham, Pletcher, Maker to name a few speaks dividends for the track.

Trainer Mark Casse is front and center again this year breaking all records of long standing before him. He is heading to the Canadian Hall of famer, after what could be said his best year on the track. His breakthrough wins at the Breeders’ Cup at Keeneland have given him several tasty dates this year.

As if to endorse the turf movement at Woodbine his filly TEPIN is going to Royal Ascot to compete in the Queen Anne stakes early June (Covered by and spread the gospel according to Woodbine. Then she will campaign in the international races in the fall at Woodbine with a view to the Breeders’ Cup at Santa Anita.

Exciting times for all concerned in the Great white North we will be giving our selections each and every race day.

Next Week….. our take on the oldest stakes race in North America The Queens Plate and the changing face of horse racing in Canada.

May the horse (Canadian and otherwise) be with you ……..

Kentucky Derby Picks 2016

By | Free Picks | No Comments

Kentucky Derby Picks

# 17 MOR SPIRIT 12/1….. This guy could come in under the Radar and was absolutely flying in his last race Santa Anita Derby 6 1/4 Lengths behind Exaggerator in the slop. Stevens knows what he has under him and has been treating him with kid gloves each time he has been aboard.  Plus Mr Baffert is looking to rewrite the record books again.

# 14 MOHAYMEN 10/1….. Shadewell/McLaughlin 2 Million $$$ colt. They cannot explain his terrible run in the Florida Derby was it the good conditions distance shouldn’t be a problem. Take a look at his works since then pretty dam smart the one on the 20th April is a standout all  on fast tracks which could be the key check before including.

# 8 LANI 30/1….. Our Japanese entrant you just can’t ignore these guys a tapit colt by a Sunday Silence mare which has been the backbone of their breeding program since day One. Won has he pleased in the UAE Derby will be coming with a big run has been over here a while acclimatising.

# 13 NYQUIST 3/1….. Local contacts (Here in Windsor Canada owned) John Paul Reddam was a school teacher then went on to bigger and better things. Not much that you can be negative about this guy except don’t like the trainer but he knows how to get em across the line legally or not. Unbeaten life time. Will he get the distance an Uncle Mo off spring so  should be ok. Will be hammered at the windows for sure …….

# 4 MO TOM 20/1….. Now this guy is value for money. Amoss Kentucky trainer who can get a horse ready for a big race. Blame Breeders Cup with Zanyetta. He instructs his jocks not to whip the horse unless absolutely necessary he is a nervous type with lots bumping checked runs  etc. Puts it together one time he will storm in.

Have went in order I think will finish top to bottom have Moyhayman at  25’s 18/1 12/1 then the bad race.>> Box all of em for superfecta trifecta and exacta.

Good Luck to one and all …………………….. Roy
